The Temple Gate Journal by Timothy J. Harland Temple Gate Journal Companion The Temple Gate Journal Oct 11, 2026 · @timothy harland Before you begin A guided companion to 365 Days at the Temple Gate. The book gives you the day's lens. This journal is where you keep the evidence, with two people beside you who are very good at looking. The gate is open before you reach it. Two people are already standing there. One is reading the hinges. The other is reading you. Lena: "You made it." Jonah: "Most people stop at the door." Lena: "This isn't a door. It's a year." They are not here to fix you. They are not here to grade you. They are here to ask questions, the same kind they ask everywhere, until you start asking them yourself. Jonah: "Five minutes a day." Lena: "Twenty on the last one." Jonah: "Everything in between is one sentence." How the year is built Thirteen chambers. Four weeks in each. Every week walks the same seven forms, so by the second chamber the rhythm will carry you even on days your head will not. Day 365 closes the year. Lena: "Same seven steps. Fifty-two times." Jonah: "Repetition is part of the design." Lena: "So the answers can't be the same fifty-two times." That is the only rule about repetition. The form repeats. Your evidence does not. Write about this day, not about the affirmation. Page 1 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion The five tests Before you speak an affirmation, hold it up to the light. Lena checks the first three. Jonah checks the last two. True enough. It does not ask you to pretend a feeling, outcome or certainty you do not have. Agentic. It names something you can practice, choose, protect, receive or release. Compassionate. It counts you among the people who deserve care. System-aware. It respects your body, your limits, what belongs to whom, and who else is involved. Terminating. It ends in a next action or an exit. Not an endless audit. Lena: "If it fails one, rewrite it." Jonah: "That's not cheating." Lena: "That's the method." When the words feel false Some mornings the affirmation will sound like someone else's life. Do not force it. Jonah: "Move it from who you are to what you can do." "I am calm" becomes "I can take one calmer breath." "I trust completely" becomes "I can gather one more piece of evidence." Lena: "Believable beats loud." What goes where Each week has a log. One row per day. Four small cells. Date. Whatever day you actually did it. Start any day of the year. Capacity. One word: low, moderate or high. Signal. What you sensed or did, in plain words. No explanation. Evening sentence. The answer to that form's evening question. Miss a day and the row stays blank. Do not backfill from memory. Lena: "A blank is honest." Jonah: "A guess dressed up as data isn't." Page 2 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion One boundary before the gate This is Shaolin-inspired imagery, not religious instruction or martial training. On anything clinical, such as medication, safety thresholds or when to restart after a stop, your healthcare providers outrank this journal. Jonah: "Their lens. Their jurisdiction." Lena: "Ours is the notebook." Started: Lena holds the gate open. Lena: "Ready?" Jonah: "Doesn't have to be." The seven forms Every week walks this same path, Sunday to Saturday. Read the day in the book, then come back here. Lena and Jonah will ask the same questions every week. Your answers are the part that changes. Jonah: "Morning: read it, say it, do the smallest version." Lena: "Evening: one sentence. Then close the book." Day 1 · Receive The week opens with a premise. Not a slogan. A starting condition. Lena: "Say it back to me. Your words." Jonah: "Words you'd still believe on a bad day." Morning: write the premise in your own words. Lena: "So what changes if you let that be true today?" Evening question: What changes if I let this premise be true today? Day 2 · Notice Something will show up today. Tight jaw. Fog. A snap in your voice. A third coffee. Jonah: "Don't explain it." Page 3 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Lena: "Just tell us what it was." Jonah: "When. How strong. What was going on." Write it the way a camera would see it. "Shoulders up at 3pm" is a signal. "Stressed about everything" is already a story. Evening question: What did I notice before the story arrived? Day 3 · Protect Lena: "What do you need to keep safe today?" Jonah: "Say it as something you'll do." Lena: "Not something someone else has to obey." "I'm closing the laptop at ten" is a limit. "Nobody should message me after nine" is a wish about other people. Evening question: Which boundary preserved my future choice? Day 4 · Practice The book gives you one small action. Do it at the smallest size that still counts. Jonah: "Smaller." Lena: "Smaller than that." Jonah: "Now do it." Evening question: What did the action teach me that thought alone could not? Day 5 · Relate Make one clear request or one clear offer. Then write down who owns the next step. Lena: "What do you actually need from them?" Jonah: "And what's yours to carry after you ask?" Lena: "Warm." Jonah: "And visible." Evening question: Did my way of relating increase clarity and agency? Page 4 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Day 6 · Integrate Three columns. Body. People. Work. One line each on what it needs from the other two. Lena: "Which one's been loudest this week?" Jonah: "Which one hasn't said anything?" Write the three lines in the evening cell, or beneath the week's table if they need room. Evening question: Which branch needed a voice, and which branch needed a limit? Day 7 · Release The temple closes for the week. Name three loops. Jonah: "One closed." Lena: "One scheduled." Jonah: "One you're putting down on purpose." Lena: "Putting it down isn't failing it." Evening question: What can remain unfinished without remaining inside me tonight? ••• Lena: "Seven questions." Jonah: "You'll know them by heart by the third chamber." Lena: "That's when they start working." Saturdays and chamber endings The Saturday look After the Release entry, before you close the book, read the week's seven rows once. Five minutes. Then answer under that week's table. Jonah puts the seven rows side by side. Jonah: "What showed up more than once?" Lena: "How many low days?" Jonah: "What held?" Page 5 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Lena: "What slipped?" Jonah: "As data." Lena: "Not as a verdict." Then one sentence: what this week taught you that you will carry into the next premise. If the week was mostly blank, the review is one line: "Blank week. Starting again Sunday." Lena: "That counts." Jonah: "That's a baseline." The chamber close Every fourth Saturday, a chamber ends. Read only the four Saturday reviews. Then answer five questions under the chamber's final week. 1. What was this chamber really about, for me? 2. Which two or three rows prove it? 3. Did low days rise, fall or hold across the four weeks? 4. One practice I'm keeping. 5. If something shook loose, which layer needs care first? Body, safety, pace, autonomy, people, method, build or handoff. Lena: "Repair from the bottom." Jonah: "Not from whatever's loudest." Lena looks at the chamber title one more time. Lena: "And if it went badly?" Jonah: "Then we learned where the map was wrong." No chamber becomes the throne. A hard chamber is information for the next one, not a reason to restart the year. Chamber 01 · The Ground Days 1–28. Biology establishes jurisdiction. The body is not a subordinate department. The first chamber is quiet. No puzzles on the walls. Just a floor. Jonah: "Starting with the body?" Page 6 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Lena: "Everything else stands on it." Jonah: "Even the thinking?" Lena: "Especially the thinking." Week 01 · The Body Speaks First Premise: The body supplies the first facts of every day. Affirmation: My body is a source of truth, and I can listen without fear. Lena: "Before the plan. Jonah taps it. It is louder than it looks. Jonah: "Who rings it?" Lena: "Whoever notices first." Jonah: "Even if it's inconvenient?" Page 9 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Lena: "That's when it matters." Week 05 · Signals Are Not Accusations Premise: A warning signal describes system state; it does not prosecute character. An old engine sits in the corner of this chamber, a brass governor spinning on top. The faster it turns, the more it slows the whole machine down. Jonah: "It's built to hold itself back." Lena: "That's why it doesn't explode." Page 12 of 46 Temple Gate Journal Companion Week 09 · Capacity Is a Design Input Premise: Available capacity is a fact to design with, not an obstacle to deny. Affirmation: I can honor today's capacity without shrinking tomorrow's possibility. Lena: "Low, moderate or high. Today. Not on your best day." Lena and Jonah are already there, but this time they are not in front of you. They are standing off to the side, the way people do when it is your turn to walk through first. Lena: "So." Jonah: "How'd it go?" Twenty minutes today, not five. Read only the thirteen chamber closes. Not every row. Then answer. The year in one sentence: Lena: "Which chambers had the most low days?" Jonah: "And what was going on around you then?" Where the low days clustered, and why: Jonah: "Which signals do you catch earlier now?" Lena: "Name the chamber where you learned each one." Signals I catch earlier: Lena: "What are you keeping?" Jonah: "Three things. No more." Lena: "A fourth is just a new open branch." Three practices I'm keeping: Jonah: "And what are you setting down?" Then do one ordinary, nourishing thing that doesn't have to become a lesson, a product, a proof or a plan. Lena: "That's it." Jonah: "That's the whole thing." What does the living person want to carry forward? After the year Keep the entries that changed how you act, how you relate or how you recover. Revise the ones that felt false. Retire any rule that started acting like a throne. Leave the waypoints where someone can find them, even if that someone is you next year. Then choose. Start again at Day 1. Go back to the chamber that needs another pass. Or stop here. All three are valid completion states. Lena steps back from the gate. Lena: "Your map now." Jonah: "It always was." The system serves the life. Not the other way around. Completed: Page 46 of 46
